About Mike Orfinger

Mike Orfinger was born in Daytona Beach, and grew up in Volusia and Flagler Counties.  He graduated from Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach in 1982.  While in high school and college, Mike worked a variety of jobs, from bagging groceries and stocking shelves, to being an announcer for three radio stations in North Carolina.

After graduating from Wake Forest University and the University of Florida College of Law, Mike became a member of The Florida Bar in 1989.  While practicing law in Orlando, he married his high school sweetheart Laura-Grace in 1991. A few months later they moved back to Volusia County, where Mike continued his law practice.  In 2004, after some 14 years of litigation practice, Mike became a full-time mediator.  As a mediator, he served as a neutral third party helping people solve their legal disputes without going to trial.

Mike and Laura-Grace have two children, Katherine and Adam. Katherine, 23, is a graduate of Daytona State College, and Adam, 21, graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.

“Laura-Grace, Katherine, and Adam are the most important people in the world to me,” he says.  “If I could only be remembered for one thing, I’d want to be remembered as a good family man.”

When they get a chance, Mike and Laura-Grace love to travel, and sometimes (inevitably if Mike plans the trip) that takes them to a baseball stadium.  Mike is a huge baseball fan, whether it’s traveling to a game with Adam, sitting in the bleachers at Daytona Tortugas games, or seeing his beloved Atlanta Braves with the whole family.  He looks forward to Spring Training every year and almost always manages to catch at least one game.  He’s also a lifelong Florida Gators football fan, which makes things interesting at home each year when the Gators play Laura-Grace’s Tennessee Volunteers and Florida State University Seminoles.

Mike credits his late parents, Judge Melvin Orfinger and Shirley Orfinger, as the source of his morals and values.  “My Dad taught me by his actions that my word should be my bond, that good reputations take years to build but can be torn down in a minute, and that I couldn’t be truly successful as a lawyer or anything else unless I was also ethical.  I’ve always tried to live by that code, and Laura-Grace and I have tried to teach it to our children as well.”

His parents also taught Mike the importance of giving back to the community his family has called home for nearly a century.  Mike has done that by serving as a Trustee of Temple Beth-El in Ormond Beach for some 25 years, including a term as President.  He’s previously volunteered for Volusia County Teen Court, and he is a member of the Rotary Club of Daytona Beach.  He has served the legal community as a member and Chair of a Seventh Circuit Grievance Committee, and he currently chairs the Florida Supreme Court Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution Rules and Policy.

Mike is honored and humbled to serve as your Circuit Judge, and he looks forward to serving the Seventh Judicial Circuit for many years to come.
